A new year brings a new team with new decisions. Monday saw the first match of the new structure this year- 1A and 1B, two equal ability mixed teams.

A phenomenal first, all 13 of the starting 13 were available to play and ready to put their weeks of training into action. With our new coach reffing and Marco and Leah tabling, we were ready to go.

The first quarter was very much finding our feet and learning the strengths of this new team. Whilst our attacks were good, our defence for their counters was poor and we allowed too many of their goals in the first quarter. Our confidence was kept up though by an amazing goal from fresher Rory, proving you don’t need to have played before!

The second quarter happened in a similar vain to the first. We were better at our defence but had some trouble getting up and scoring on our attack. A strong ball from the IC team left the keeper dazed for a good five minutes and so the half way whistle was blown.

Our best quarter of the match was the third, losing only 4-3. All the parts of our game were moving into place and the middle section of the quarter was spent staying very close to our player and marking very tightly. Fortunately, having 13 people meant a full change of team wasn’t a problem and fresh legs were very much needed.

The final quarter passed in a blur, with everyone trying to get half a match there were lots of subs in the final quarter. A good assist from Emma meant we got a final goal in for the quarter. I hope the freshers enjoyed their first mixed match! This game showed us weaknesses for future mixed games and how we can use our matches to improve our BUCS games too!
