Men vs Surrey - 20/10/2019

BLWP 23 - 10 Surrey

First match report of the season and what a match to start with!! On a cold winter's evening thirteen men arrived at the fortress of York Hall to defend against the full weight of Surrey’s team. Looking on were a group of amazing home supporters who gave us the energy to fight in this very physical game.

As the first quarter got underway we quickly realised Surrey had come to play a very rough game. Faster than you could believe one of their players already had three major fouls from dirty tackles in pit, leading to him being kicked out for the rest of the game. The team capitalised on this with an incredible shot and goal from Aleandro and four goals scored by an ever confident Marco from the outside of the arc, with only one being conceded. After a quick breather and a team talk the second quarter had begun and this would prove to be an even greater physical challenge. This quarter would see Aleandro light the pool on fire with three powerful shots the keeper couldn’t have hoped to save. And after another goal from Jono their aggression got the better of them and as they lashed out Jono caught a foot to the face. This sent our man reeling as he left the pool, but we knew he would return after half time stronger and more motivated than before.

The second half of the game would prove to be more subdued than the first as the team focused their defence on the best player from Surrey, who at this point had scored all of their goals. This new strategy and some incredible offensive shooting from Marco, Aleandro and Jono gave the team another sixteen goals before the end of the match while only letting in a further six.

Every member of the team put in an absolute shift to make an incredible twenty three to ten score in our first match of the season. A special shout out must go to the three freshers playing their first match with the club: Theo, Liam P and Mark. Thanks again to everyone who came to watch and to every member of the team for an incredible opening match.
