Women vs Southampton - 15/02/2023 (H)

BLWP 1 - 12 Southampton

The four hour journey back from Southampton had given our women’s team a lot of time to reflect and get ready for our match this week. Despite illness striking down on the club, we were ready to give it our all.

After a rushed warm up while the men played on, we got ready for a quick match with Southampton so that they could get home early. Tadpole Kev was hesitant to do the swim off but took it in her stride, happily tackling her player on the wing. The dreaded number seven was back to harass the pit players, switching up position throughout the match. Helsinki was strong in Pit D, turning her player and keeping the ball away from the goal. Virgin River made some excellent breaks away from her player on the wing. Defence was strong from everyone in this quarter and Southamptons captain was shocked by how much they lost their cool.

The second quarter saw some of our energy wain but we were all there to support each other, with Lil Sardine putting in a shift in Pit D. Coily communicated well to the other players, receiving the ball and making a beautiful pass around the arc. Leech was also feeling norty and got sent out! Naughty Leech! Unfortunately we let a few goals in this quarter but we were ready to face the team up in the next quarter.

Tadpole Eira was quick as a driver, and brought the ball close to the goal, before being decked by some Southampton players. Despite being terrified and self deprecating about her swimming, Tadpole Molly was fast and kept up with her player. Anglerfish impressed Southampton with an amazing shot into the goal, completely over No.7s head - it was definitely worth the compliments she received.

Falala was a menace in this quarter and played a few different positions in the pool, which baffled the opposition. Tadpole Holly kept her player far out on the wing, allowing for some nice arc set ups. Despite some great support from the men’s team, time eventually ran out for us and we lost a few goals to Southampton.

It’s definitely been an intense few matches from us girls, and with many of our players suffering from illness, it was great to see everyone give it their all! Unfortunately we lost 12-1 to Southampton, but they noted that our play was a lot smoother and less ‘scratchy’. Maybe we should put on our acrylics next time.

Player of the match goes to Lil Sardine for some great adapting and high energy throughout the match
