Women vs Surrey - 23/10/2022 (A)

BLWP 3 - 11 Surrey

Our first women’s match of the year took us to the dark depths of Surrey. There was much excitement as we had our first full squad since 2020, and it was the first ever match for many of our tadpoles!

In the first quarter we saw some lovely defence and arc formations from our squad, despite some brutal defence from the opposite team. Incidor showed her national swimmer skills, chasing after a ball that was thrown to the oppositions side. Tadpole Holly held her own against a vicious defender and Tadpole Martha B provided great support for the goalie and communicated well with the rest of the team. Unfortunately, we conceded four goals in this quarter but this only fuelled our determination!

The second half saw some first for everyone. Tadpole Eira put in an excellent shift, ditching her defender and shooting the first goal of the match. Tadpole Marina  and Anglerfish became a slightly unlikely but nonetheless iconic duo in pit. Despite this mix up of positions, defence was stronger with three opposing goals scored during this match!

After a team talk from the ref, we were ready to face the next half! Tadpole Leiah remained strong in the wing throughout, keeping her player on her toes as she paced up and down the pool! Tadpole Smaragda was strong on defence, sticking close to her players. Helsinki went feral in pit defence, getting her first ever major at the end of the quarter. Anglerfish snuck a cheeky goal in the net (not the crossbar) and defence was strong with only two goals scored by the opposition.

Lil sardine saw red in the final quarter and pushed her player to her limit, drawing some excellent fouls. Leech wriggled free of her player and was able to bring the ball directly to the goal on loads of occasions. Defence stayed strong and steady for the last few minutes, with two opposing goals scored! Tadpole Chere had a final showdown with the goalie, third time is definitively the charm.

There was some excellent play from everyone during this match, despite a difficult audience! There was so much improvement throughout the match, so keep a look out throughout the season…

Player of the match goes to Tadpole Leiah for getting stuck in with the starting seven and communicating really well with the goalie!

Well played girls!
