Women vs Surrey (H) - 19/02/2024
Our final women’s home match was against Surrey at the lovely poplar baths.
We started off with a lovely row of our defensive girls, won the ball back, and passed around the pool a bit. Helsinki made a nice pass towards a driving Falala, who took a lovely powerful shot into the goal. Anglerfish had some time in pit, wrestling away with her player, but managed to win us 2 goals in this quarter. Tadpole Josie once again went on a mission to crash pit and also showed she’s got an arm and a half, whacking the ball into the back of the net.
First quarter 5-1 to barts.
Into the second quarter we saw some fabulous saves from tadpole Eira, who once again came to the rescue and stepped into goal, even with a short warmup. So the continuous counter attacks gained us the advantage to get a few more shots in. Lil Sardine managed to swim the ball up the pool and gave some skilful assists into pit. Tadpole Isabel put some gorgeous pressure on the opposition as well.
2nd quarter 8-1 to barts.
The third quarter we saw tadpole Mary give a proper fight for the ball and held off her player with class. Over on the other wing we had Ceviche put in a good shift and had a close shot at a goal! Helsinki continued fighting for the ball, and made some nice movement around the pool. Tadpole Kev sped up the wing and made some gorg space for receiving the ball.
3rd quarter 11-2 to barts.
Into the final quarter now, and we had Lil sardine doing the swim off, putting all those early morning training sessions to good use. Tadpole Isabel had some fun time in goal, smiling away at the incoming ball, and managed to snatch some saves. Leech made some good passes around the arc and into pit, and made some nice drives as well. Anglerfish fended off Surrey’s pit player well, winning us a goal as well as a penalty, which was slammed into the net by Anglerfish herself.
Really nice play from all the girls, nice to some solid defence and good communication throughout. Final score 13-5 to Barts!
Player of the match: Charis for consistently putting pressure on her player and showing some great endurance throughout.
