Women vs Surrey - 01/02/2023 (H)

BLWP 11 - 5 Surrey

The end of the season women’s match was an incredible show of teamwork and technique. The team grouped together and played out of their comfort zone, with enthusiasm as always!

Surrey was fast at the start, winning the ball from the swim off. However, they were quickly bowled over by our defence and stood no chance. Lil Sardine was controlled and fierce on her player, pushing her to lose her grip on the ball. Tadpole Eira was incredible in goal, making three amazing saves without ever even training as a goalie! Despite the opposition goalies long limbs, Falala managed to sneak a goal in at the end of the first quarter. We were one up and ready to go!

The second quarter saw some of our best play all season. There was some great communication between Marina Coil and Incidor near the goal, which had Surrey very perplexed. Incidor managed to loop a shot right into the net, which seemed to fuel her throughout the game. This was really Anglerfish’s time to shine, 5 goals went in so quickly it was unbelievable. There were some incredible set ups here too, with Tadpole Martha out-swimming her player and dropping the ball into pit. At halftime we were up by 7-1.

We were determined to keep this lead heading in to the second half. Tadpole Leiah was so sneaky on the wing, it was moving so quickly that her player could barely see her until it was too late, and the ball was ours. Leech was great at assisting in this, distracting both her player and Leiah’s with just pure aggression! Unfortunately the ref didn’t appreciate this and they did both get sent out, but I think they were just allowing Surrey to have a rest. Tadpole Eira saved the first penalty attempt, with a second attempt knocking her back slightly but she remained a wall. We ended this third quarter on 8-3, and still had loads of energy left to give.

The final quarter of our final season kicked off with a bang. Tadpole Kev sped up the wing and pushed their player out, there was absolutely no way the ball was going near the goal. Tadpole Molly kept her player static, pushing her away from the goal. Incidor shocked herself in this quarter and whacked 2 goals in. Leech got wrapped but we aren’t really sure why. Tadpole Eira saved so many goals, it’s was difficult to count. Falala was excellent in Pit D, never lacking energy despite not subbing at all. Surrey called a time out and it only played to our advantage.

This was an incredible match from our girls and shows how far we have come this season. This is a team that beat us 11-3 at the beginning of the season.

The final score for this match was 11-5 to us. Massive win for the girls, we’ve only got more energy to give for the next season.

Player of the match goes to Tadpole Eira who took over in goal last minute, having never trained there before. She truly took it in her stride, with some excellent saves!
